This is one of the reasons, among many, that I don't bother telling people thanks for faving anymore. People do it for different reasons, and not always because they actually looked at your art for more than two seconds. I don't mind if someone tries to promote themselves to me, though. As long as it's not obnoxious. There's a difference between asking someone to check our your art since you have similar styles or interests, and a whole other to just spam people for attention.
